On October 7, 2001 the United States and allies launched combat operations to destroy terrorist training camps and infrastructure within Afghanistan, facilitate the capture of al-Qaeda leaders, and to set the conditions for the cessation of terrorist activities in Afghanistan. Later expanded to include parts of Africa and Asia, combat operations would continue for over 13 years.
